Collaborating to Create an Energy Milestone: Enel X Taiwan Recognized by Taipower

Taipower’s Energy Trading Platform celebrates its third anniversary; Enel X Taiwan honored at the ceremony for remarkable contributions.

Enel X Taiwan was invited to participate in the third anniversary celebration of Taipower's Energy Trading Platform and Gartner Award Ceremony on 25 November. The event, hosted by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), brought together numerous industry leaders and partners to commemorate this significant milestone and Taipower’s remarkable achievements. During the ceremony, Taipower recognized the contributions of its collaborators and qualified traders, including Enel X Taiwan, which was invited to share its market success stories, demonstrating its continued efforts in driving energy innovation.

Gartner, a global think tank dedicated to providing third-party ICT research and consulting services to enterprises and governments, has hosted the “Government Digital Innovation Awards” competition annually since 2019. This year, for the first time, it introduced the “Global Power and Utilities Digital Innovation Award.” Taipower's Energy Trading Platform, developed as part of its Distributed Energy Resource Smart Dispatching and Monitoring System, won the top honor in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to Taipower, the platform has been operational for three years, attracting nearly 100 qualified traders with a total participation capacity exceeding 1.7 GW. Taipower emphasized that it will continue leveraging innovative technologies to enhance grid security and flexibility, ensuring a stable power supply.

Taipower Vice President Wu Chin-Chung expressed gratitude during the event for Gartner’s recognition of the distributed resource dispatch system and extended his thanks to all collaborating organizations and market participants by presenting them with certificates of appreciation. He also highlighted, “The Energy Trading Platform is just the beginning. There are many challenges and opportunities ahead, requiring collective effort to succeed.” Gartner’s Taiwan General Manager, Liao Ming-Jen, compared Taipower’s achievement to Taiwan’s baseball team winning the 2024 WBSC Premier12 Championship, expressing immense pride as a Taiwanese.

Cologne Chen, Head of Business Development at Enel X Taiwan, said, “Enel X Taiwan firmly believes in the power of distributed resource aggregation. Small and medium demand response resources account for around 90% of our Virtual Power Plant. This includes over 25 industries and 140 resources, highlighting the crucial role of small-scale resources in the power market. When businesses work together as part of our VPP to stabilise the grid, they help the broader community by accelerating the transition to renewable energy, and by keeping the lights on.”

Managing distributed demand response resources can be challenging, particularly when ensuring over 100 electricity users meet their committed capacity during standby periods, and when efficiently dispatching a large number of users during grid events. Enel X Taiwan has implemented a monitoring mechanism for user standby performance to mitigate risks of under performing. If businesses participating in Enel X Taiwan’s VPP have insufficient standby capacity, our dispatch center immediately provides notifications and assistance to resolve user-side issues. This helps both our customers meet performance targets, and Taipower by ensuring all standby capacity can be delivered.

During dispatch events, real-time support is offered to guide Enel X Taiwan customers in reducing their energy load, achieving optimal results and fulfilling the commitment to grid stability. Businesses have the ability to opt-in or opt-out of markets at the designated time as suits their operational needs.

Between 2017 and October 2024, Enel X Taiwan has assisted Taipower in responding to 148 dispatch events. From the platform’s official launch in 2021 to October 2024, it supported 93 events, achieving an average execution rate exceeding 100%. Since the Energy Trading Platform commenced operations on November 15, 2021, Enel X Taiwan has quickly transitioned its previously engaged non-traditional ancillary service market customers to the platform. Enel X Taiwan now stands as the largest qualified trader on the platform in terms of aggregated demand response ancillary service capacity, continuing to lead market development and contributing significantly to Taiwan’s energy transition.
